Acne
Acne is the most common of all skin problems, particularly at puberty, but may also affect adults. It occurs mostly on the face, but can also appear on the back, chest and shoulders. It is also more common in males. Acne can have many causes, which require an integrated and holistic approach. There are two forms:
Acne vulgaris – affects the hair follicles and oil secreting glands of the skin. Manifests as blackheads, whiteheads and inflammation.
Acne conglobata – more severe with deep cyst formation and subsequent scarring.
Nutrition
Avoid sugar, coffee, tea, dairy, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and junk food. Drink dandelion tea (Taraxa Café) instead of coffee or tea.
Drink plenty of water – the additional juice of a fresh lemon will help.
Evening primrose oil (Mega GLA) will help balance hormones.
Eat plenty of fresh fruit and raw olive oil, which is beneficial for hormone function. ‘The Green Stuff’ multi-vitamin & mineral food concentrate is ideal complete nutrition – especially if fresh fruit & vegetables are lacking in the diet!
It is also important to bear in mind that many individuals are usually treated with antibiotics, which encourage intestinal overgrowth of Candida albicans; this chronic yeast infection may actually make acne worse and must be treated if present. Note: If Candida is present – it is strongly advised to follow a candida diet.
Natural Healing
Both witch hazel & tea-tree essential oils will help if applied to affected areas with cotton wool two or three times a day. The oils will clean and unclog giving antibiotic-like protection to the skin. Alternatively you can use our effective Acne Face Wash.
Liver cleansing will be helpful, and possibly colon cleansing, if elimination of toxins or digestive imbalances are a problem.
Herbs
Herbs to support the liver and endocrine system are important: agnus castus berry for young women and saw palmetto berries for young men.
Herbs to help eliminate acne are blood cleansers and immune boosters like goldenseal root, dandelion root, burdock root, sarsaparilla root, nettle leaf, barberry root bark, echinacea root, and cleavers herb.
