Asthma

Asthma is an allergic disorder characterised by where the bronchi of the lungs contract into spasm, making breathing out very constricted. Symptoms include: recurrent attacks of shortness of breath, coughing and excess mucous. Triggers include house dust, pollen, dairy and wheat product allergies, stress and viral or bacterial infection. Physically, low or poor immune system function and poor digestion, cold air, and emotional upset all contribute to and can indeed cause asthma.

  • Ensure good digestion, absorption and gut flora levels and if they are poor look further for help, try pro-biotics like acidophilus or pro-biotic yoghurt drinks.
  • Include large amounts of garlic in your diet each day.
  • Building tonic herb and foods may be needed to help strengthen the body.

    Herbs

  • For the anxiety and tension preceding the spasms, which make breathing difficult, take calming herbs like Nervous System Support Formula and also chamomile tea.
  • A herbalist may wish to prescribe valerian root in the short-term which helps to quickly break the tension and gives usually much-needed sleep, but this herb does not actually feed the nervous system as other herbs do.
  • If your stomach can cope then consume cayenne powder and raw chilli to increase circulation.
  • Siberian ginseng root and other herbs will feed badly exhausted adrenals and at the same time act like hydrocortisone reducing any inflammation. Alternatively, try our Adrenal Support Formula.
