COUGHS
When the body is trying to expectorate excess mucus due to an infection, a cough should never be suppressed, but helped to achieve its important function. However, debilitating coughs can be exhausting if due to a tickle which is unproductive and prevents sleep.
Nutrition
If it is a dry, hacking cough with little mucus and sweating, then consume a lot of raw fruits and juices which will encourage more watery productive mucous
If there is a lot of pale mucus and congestion, avoid cold fruits and juices, and use more warming foods like garlic and onion soups.
Take plenty of fluids like water and fresh lemon juice.
Here is a wonderful home remedy for coughs and colds, and this alone can do the job:- ½ part cayenne pepper, 1 part horseradish root, 1 part garlic bulb, 1 part onion bulb and 1 part ginger root. All these must be freshly juiced in a liquidizer in raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar. Leave to marinate after juicing in the liquidizer for two days or longer. Then sieve and filter through the muslin. Bottle it and keep it in the fridge. Drink plenty. Take between 2 and 10 tsp up to five times daily, gargle with it and then swallow. Alternatively you could try the ready-made Winter Elixir.
Natural Healing
A foot bath of hot water with mustard powder added to it is a great way of heating and sweating the body but the individual must be naturally strong. Then, massage an oil mix of eucalyptus into the chest and soles of the feet - already hot and yellow from the mustard!
A sprinkling of eucalyptus essential oil on pillows and sheets is important.
Herbs
As a preventative measure in winter; drink home-made elderberry and elder flower syrup - It encourages perspiration and provides valuable vitamins and minerals. Just cover elder flowers in vegetable glycerine and keep warm to allow it to macerate; in autumn add elderberries and keep well covered. Dilute with spring water. Take 1tsp at a time. Or try Cherry Bark & Elderberry syrup.
Use mullein flowers, plantain leaf and red clover flowers tea while traditional wild herbs, which are also excellent, are horehound herb, elecampane root and yarrow herb.
