Endometriosis

Endometrial cells line the wall of the uterus and build up each month; at the time of menstruation they shed; thus, menstrual flow. Endometriosis is when this lining produces small nests of stray cells, which are transported out of the womb and into the fallopian tubes, bladder, ovaries and elsewhere (even as far reaching as the lungs). The tissue still behaves as if it were in the womb and it continues to fluctuate with the cyclic hormonal changes. Wherever these stray cells settle, they will bleed monthly; coinciding with your menstrual cycle. This blood collects and stagnates, causing toxic build-ups, which eventually become inflamed and finally they develop into blood filled cysts.

The causes of endometriosis are not known, but recent information suggests that a poorly functioning immune system might be partly responsible; if the immune system is not functioning properly then any invasive straying cells that should be instantaneously killed of are not, instead they travel through the blood stream or lymph system and are deposited on other organs, e.g. the lungs. Other probable causes are, poor hygiene, man-made fibres in underwear, repeated infections including P.I.D. (pelvic inflammatory disease), dirty surgical implements, dirty hands and fingers, tampons, retained placenta, and all manor of outside poisoning creates infections. Sluggish periods with improper emptying of the womb each month could also be a possibility, hwever, endometrial cells have been found in young girls which suggests a genetic link. If this disorder is caught early on, many positive steps can be taken but treatment must be very committed. Orthodox methods of surgery and drugs can be used, but the male steroid drugs like Danizol, which prevent a woman from menstruating, have alarming side effects (now little used thankfully). Many patients have felt depressed on it, as their breasts shrink, voice lowers and hair grows. Like pregnancy (another method used to ‘cure’ endometriosis), it gives the body a chance to not menstruate. Other treatments consist of giving synthetic progesterone, but the side effects of these can also be alarming and, many women would prefer to discontinue taking it, rather than suffer the side effects.

The severe pain suffered with endometriosis can take the form of: pelvic pain – especially around ovulation and menstruating; irregular or excessive menstrual bleeding; backache (lower back especially); painful lovemaking; infertility; stomach, small intestine and large intestine discomfort; painful urination; prolonged menstrual bleeding, constipation and diarrhoea in fluctuation.

Nutrition

  • Maintain a good diet of wholegrains, vegetables and plenty of citrus fruits (especially lemons). Include ‘The Green Stuff’ vitamin & mineral food concentrate.
  • Avoid meats, dairy and eggs, which have been produced on synthetic hormones.
  • Theobromine and caffeine found in tea, coffee and chocolate also produce extra oestrogen, therefore it is important to omit these from your diet also.

    Natural Healing

  • Colon, liver and kidney cleanses will be vitally important. Enquire for details.
  • Lose weight if you need to, as fat stores oestrogen. Take 1 mega GLA capsule and Spirulina (e.g. ‘The Green Stuff’ vitamin & mineral food concentrate) to facilitate weight loss and help with pains and cramping. Increase fibre in your diet as this also absorbs oestrogen and helps remove it through the bowel.
  • Hot and cold showers and sitz baths will help to maintain circulation in the womb area, this is vital for the healing process.
  • For pain: use a hot castor oil pack over the area. Construct a muslin or flannel pack and soak it in warmed castor oil. After placing on the body (over the womb area), and taping in place, cover with plastic (cling film will do). The castor oil pack may be done at night and left in place until morning, when you may need baking soda to help remove it. Be aware that the pack may become stained and dirty with the toxins drawn out by the castor oil, or sometimes, though not always, the toxins go ‘inwards’ and are taken away via the lymph system. It is important to wash or replace the pack nightly.

    Herbs

  • For excessive bleeding, use yarrow herb and alfalfa leaf.
  • There is always a possibility of infection, therefore goldenseal root or barberry root bark will be useful at the beginning of the programme. They both contain berberine, which can also help with excessive bleeding by acting as an astringent.
  • Liver herbs like wild yam, barberry root bark, cinnamon, milk thistle seed and dandelion root will help.
  • The immune system should be functioning efficiently; include herbs like pau d’arco inner bark, Siberian ginseng root, echinacea root, and so on.
  • Use endocrine herbs to balance and tone the system – especially those that are rich in progesterone type substances. These can balance the overpowering effects of oestrogen. Use a combination of alfalfa leaf, sarsaparilla root, wild yam tuber, liquorice rhizome, false unicorn root, squaw vine herb, agnus castus berry and red raspberry leaf.
  • For excessive cramps and pain, useful herbs in combination are cramp bark, black cohosh root, and lobelia herb.
  • Kelp will also facilitate the process of eliminating oestrogen excesses in the body.
  • Use vaginal pessaries (made to order, please enquire) every third night and douche with herbs at least once a week – these methods will help the body to rid the area of localized infection and encourage the re-growth of normal tissue.
