Insomnia
Insomnia is an extremely common complaint, with up to 30% of the population suffering. Many use over-the-counter medications to combat the problem, while others seek stronger sedatives. Insomnia is closely related to depression. There are various causes including: anxiety or tension; emotional arousal; phobia of sleep; fear of insomnia; disruptive environment; pain or discomfort; caffeine; alcohol; hypoglycaemia. Various compounds in food and drink can also interfere with normal sleep, including stimulants, thyroid preparations, oral contraceptives, bet-blockers, marijuana, alcohol, tea and chocolate. Restless leg syndrome is common with insomnia.
Nutrition
Stop all stimulants like tea, coffee, alcohol, chocolate, nicotine, and sugar after 6pm, or if insomnia is that bad avoid these foods and drinks altogether.
Low night-time blood glucose levels are important cause of insomnia. Check if you are hypoglycaemic.
Oats before bed (porridge) rich in calcium and magnesium, can aid better sleep if eaten at night. It will also help restless leg syndrome.
Other helpful supplements to be taken 45 minutes before bed can help aid restful sleep: Vitamin B6, Magnesium, Tryptophan.
Natural Healing
Barefoot walking on the grass before going to bed will help to ground you.
Falling asleep with gentle meditation or relaxing music can help.
Try lavender essential oil in a warm bath before bed and a few drops on your pillow.
Amethyst crystals have a calming effect if put under a pillow or next to the bed.
Regular exercise is known to improve well being and sleep quality, but should be performed in the morning or early evening, not before going to bed.

Numerous plants have a sedative action. Those that are known to promote sleep are passionflower, hops, valerian, skullcap, chamomile.
